Genius Hour #6 Reflection

Image
Participating in Genius Hour has been a gift from my last class of EdTech at USF!  Here, we were given an opportunity to add to our "To-Do" list the assignment of spending two hours a week on something that WE are personally passionate about! ...and it was a treat!! Through this process, I learned there is no underestimating the power of taking time for yourself, and as a result, caring for mind, body, and spirit.  This built upon the strength I felt throughout every step of the day!  During these last few weeks, including the time to do yoga during the busy work week, made me feel so much more able to accomplish the MANY things that I, like so many, are responsible for each day, i.e., as a working mom, wife, teacher, and student! I didn't always meet my weekly goal, but it's okay because it's not over.  I have learned to journey outside of my comfort zone of yoga sculpt class and participate in other types of classes like C2.  I want to continue to schedule...

Genius Hour Post #5: We Are Learners!

What have I learned about my learning process?   It's important to have a "practical" plan, as I tend to overstep when goal-setting.  Then the perfectionist in me can easily set-in if things are not going as I envisioned, and the result, is often, staying away from my efforts until I'm ready to follow my plan as close to perfect as can be.  Even though I know in my head that little effort is better than none, my dip chart illustrates my typical tendencies.  It's good to recognize the upswing in this process and realize a little effort is ALWAYS better than no effort at all.

Genius Hour Post #4- Motivation for Success

I don't mind hard work, on the contrary, I enjoy it!  But I'm not finding enough time in the day for myself.  I don't have any excuses because I truly believe in focusing on the things I can control.  And I can control including some time during the week to go to Yoga.  But for me, it still doesn't seem as important as when my kids need help with homework, have to be driven to after school activities, and I, too, have my own homework.  So with the workload busier than ever, it seems, I realize before school is my best bet. I know that with all the work that I have,  I need to work smarter and put myself as a priority!  Yoga fuels me...So I'm just going to go already-

Genius Hour Post #3- My Sentence

Image
"She remembered she was worth it!"  That's my sentence.  For me, it's all about balance.  I am constantly putting myself last, and it is not uncommon for me to make excuses as to why I don't have time to go to yoga.  I don't quite understand it because I know how good yoga makes me feel.  When I showed up to one of my favorite instructor's classes this week she asked me where I'd been.  Note that I am consistent during the summer months and tend to decline around November...  I told her I just hadn't been making time for myself.  She said, "You can't pour from an empty cup!"  I think that's what I will think about this week! Introduction Post!

“When you learn something from people or from a culture, you accept it as a gift, and it is your lifelong commitment to preserve that gift and to build on that gift.” – Yo-Yo Ma I am a mom and a teacher.  My husband, Jerry and I have two children.  Our daughter Jenna is a preteen, and all that that implies, and our son Nick is 10 years old and keeps us laughing most days. I have been a fourth grade teacher for 16 years and I love it!!! Perhaps longevity is part of my personality! I spent eleven of my teaching years in Western Springs.  Then I took a leap of faith and went to The Lane School in Hinsdale where I am entering my fifth year. I dated my husband for SEVERAL years before we married.  It was just our journey...or maybe I wanted to be really sure.  But all kidding aside, after you spend so much time with something, it can EASILY become a habit. Well, one thing I know for sure is that teaching should NEVER become a habit!  On the contrary, t...
